Hello, welcome to zoetrope.
The word zoetrope is a portmanteau combining the Greek root words ζωή (zoe: "life") and τρόπος (tropos: "turning"). Zoetrope — turning the wheel of life.
The Zoetrope was invented in the 1830s as a device to mimic motion. It's a cylindrical paper with vertical cuts around its sides through which to view the inner band of the cylinder where a set of sequenced pictures are placed around its circumference. When the viewer is at eye level and looks through the slits as they spin the device around, the zoetrope reveals the rapid succession of the inner-band images that appear to be in motion.
My name is Zoe, named after my father’s sister, my Aunt Zoe, who herself is named after her mother’s sister, her Aunt Zoe. I’m third generation Zoe in my family, and I’ve been in motion since I was born, cycling around the wheel of life.
zoetrope.me is an evolving practice and a place where I share some of what I’m up to.
